OK- this is going to be a very brief post, as everyone has been posting about the US election for weeks, and I’m sure no-one gives a toss what I think.
However, I (like about 90% of the non-US world) have my fingers crossed that Obama wins tonight. Sure, there are policy reasons, like his commitment to upholding Roe vs. Wade, his determination to shut Guantanemo and his genuinely thoughtful policies on healthcare reform in the US. But there are other reasons too – he has become an astonishingly significant figure for the body politic. If ever a man has possessed the ability to restore a global faith in politics, it is he. Which, or course will make his role almost impossible, as he seems destined to never live up to the hype. However, for 12 months at least, he has allowed the world to view politics as being an arena of hope, ambition, reform and of course change. And that’s enough reason to vote for the chappie in my book.
Suzy, Alexia and Simon will be liveblogging the election here tonight, which should be well worth tuning into. My plans remain somewhat undeveloped as of now….
